Arne Slot praised his side’s mentality following Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Sunderland but admitted concern over a potentially serious setback as fresh injury news emerged from Wearside.
Speaking after the Premier League encounter at the Stadium of Light, Slot balanced satisfaction with performance against worry over Wataru Endo’s condition. The Dutchman’s reaction offered insight into Liverpool’s physical state at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Liverpool became the first visiting Premier League side to leave Sunderland with three points this season, courtesy of Virgil van Dijk’s decisive header shortly after the hour mark. Yet the margin of victory did not fully reflect the effort required.
Slot rejected the notion that his players struggled. “It didn’t feel to me at all as a struggle because I think we played really, really, really well again,” he said. Instead, he highlighted the tactical demands posed by Sunderland’s direct approach and home record.
Heavy rain and a testing pitch added to the difficulty, particularly given Liverpool’s shorter recovery time. Slot insisted those factors did not hinder performance levels. “I think I saw a very good performance from our side and throughout the 97 minutes.”
Control of second balls and territorial dominance were key themes in his assessment. Liverpool created several promising attacking situations but required a set-piece breakthrough to secure the win — an area Slot acknowledged has not always delivered rewards this season.
Despite the positive result, attention quickly turned to injury news concerning Wataru Endo. Slot’s comments suggested the issue may be significant.
He highlighted the midfielder’s determination to continue despite discomfort. “I think Wata had the injury. He stayed on the pitch with the injury he got and challenged for another – in a set-piece – for another duel.”
That willingness to play through pain typified what Slot described as the team’s mentality. However, the underlying message was one of caution. Subsequent reports on Liverpoolfc.com indicated Slot believes Endo suffered a “serious” injury, pending further assessment.
The situation underlines ongoing physical challenges within the squad. Slot has repeatedly referenced setbacks this season, and the Sunderland match was no exception. “We’ve had so many setbacks, so many disappointments,” he said, reflecting on previous matches where performances were not matched by results.
The extent of Endo’s injury remains unclear, but the timing is problematic. With fixtures intensifying and margins tight, squad depth will again be tested.
Liverpool entered the Sunderland fixture seeking a reaction after late frustration against Manchester City. Slot was clear that resilience has been a defining trait.
“I don’t think that’s a surprise to anyone if you follow this season,” he said. “Three days later the players performed again, showed up again and play usually a very good game.”
He pointed to consistency in underlying displays even when outcomes have disappointed. Against Sunderland, he believed the balance finally tipped in their favour.
Slot also praised individual contributions across the pitch. Ibrahima Konate’s defensive work was singled out, while Mohamed Salah’s off-ball effort drew recognition. The collective defensive shape ensured Sunderland rarely threatened late on.
“We hardly conceded a chance at all,” Slot noted, referencing the improved game management compared to recent fixtures.
Slot’s broader message combined realism with optimism. Liverpool remain competitive because, in his view, they are consistently outperforming opponents. “It’s not a coincidence that we win here tonight… because we’re usually the better team on the pitch.”
He acknowledged inefficiency in front of goal remains an area for improvement but stressed that quality will eventually convert chances at a higher rate.
Sunderland’s unbeaten home league run prior to this contest illustrated the challenge faced. For Slot, leaving Wearside with three points represented validation of process and mentality, even as injury news threatens short-term disruption.
Further medical assessments will determine Endo’s availability, but Slot’s words made clear the squad’s resilience will again be required.
For now, Liverpool move forward with renewed belief — though mindful that maintaining momentum may depend on navigating another injury setback.
