Arne Slot has addressed Liverpool’s late January attempt to sign Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida, confirming the move did not materialise. The defending Premier League champions had explored defensive cover.
According to Sunderland Echo, Liverpool targeted the Dutch defender as injuries sidelined full-backs, and talks took place in the final days of the window.
Any deal required taking Geertruida from the Stadium of Light before the Monday deadline. On loan from RB Leipzing with Sunderland holding an option to buy, a switch needed the Black Cats’ approval. With little time to source a replacement, an exit was not sanctioned.
Slot, who previously worked with Geertruida at Feyenoord, said Liverpool tried to strengthen but availability and suitability proved decisive. The club completed a £60 million agreement for French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who will arrive in the summer, and Slot wanted further options, including Geertruida.
He noted three long-term injuries within his squad, naming Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak, and stressed he would not add players who are not at the required level.
Sunderland head coach Le Bris said they held honest discussions with Geertruida, the player accepted the decision after the deadline, and he is ready to play for Sunderland.
