Harvey Elliott’s horrendous ankle injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for him this season.

Not that there’s a good time to break your ankle, obviously. But Arne Slot himself admitted that Elliott was in line for significant minutes back in September when the injury occurred.

Liverpool have made do in the position in his absence, with Curtis Jones’s burst into form this season seeing him win out the advanced inside-right midfield position.

Yet Liverpool’s social media has been rife today with images of Elliott finally returning to training, involved in a session with youth players and select first-teamers that are not on international duty for one reason or another.

Could Elliott see first-team action soon?

This is an incredible development as Elliott has gone from strength to strength in the past few years in a Liverpool shirt. Earlier this season, Alexis Mac Allister described him as an 'amazing' player.

Slot used Elliott heavily during the pre-season and he was instrumental for the team, including two assists during a 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Dominik Szoboszlai was the first-choice for the position as the season started, meaning that Elliott only saw eight minutes total off the bench during Liverpool’s first three games before the injury was sustained on England under-21 duty.

Since then, however, Szoboszlai has fallen out of favour with head coach Arne Slot. Curtis Jones has exceeded in the position and will seemingly be difficult to displace.

But with the hectic Christmas period not too far away at all, Elliott may well be unleashed once again. Slot clearly values goal contributions from the position alongside the pressing, build-up and space vacating role it provides for Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right side.

Elliott’s game provides much more goalscoring threat than both Jones and Szoboszlai have in the past. This has particularly come in his role for the England under-21s, where he recorded 10 goal contributions in seven games in European Championship qualifying alone last season.

Elliott will be hoping to reclaim his place for England under-21s ahead of the European Championship next summer. But, more pressingly, he will finally have a chance to impress Arne Slot first-hand in a competitive fixture.

Whilst Jones will almost certainly retain his place, should Liverpool establish an advantage or find a need for a more creative spark, Elliott could see minutes as soon as this coming weekend.
