Arne Slot hailed his Liverpool side’s “great mentality” as they held off a second-half comeback from Everton to win the Merseyside Derby at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds went two goals ahead of their local rivals in the first half thanks to a wonderful strike from Ryan Gravenberch and a low, angled finish from Hugo Ekitike.
The old cliché that a two-goal lead is the most dangerous in football has never applied to a team more than Liverpool this season, having given up three of them already.
Idrissa Gana Gueye pulled one back with a terrific goal in the 58th minute, sparking fears that it could happen yet again. But the Merseyside outfit shut out the Toffees for the rest of the game to maintain their 100 per cent record in all competitions.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle, Slot said he was “very” satisfied with the result and performance after having to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek.
“Taking everything into account that we had to play our third game in seven games, having the early kick-off,” he said. “I don’t care at all about the early kick-off but I do care if you have to play on Wednesday night then you have to manage this through the whole week.
“Taking that all into account and winning the derby with a great first-half performance, it is good.”
Liverpool were dangerous in attack in the opening 45 minutes, but had to show defensive discipline after the interval to see out the game and secure a win without a late goal for the first time this term.
“This is what you get when you are fresh but we were tired in the second half for obvious reasons,” Slot added.
“Our mentality kept us in the game because they didn’t have another chance after their 2-1 goal. We have showed great mentality and showed great quality when we were fresh in the first half.”
