Arrascaeta left the Maracanã downcast after Flamengo lost the Recopa Sudamericana to Lanús, 3-2, missing the chance to add further to his legacy and exposing a familiar swing from highs to lows.
Lanús won the first leg in Argentina 1-0 and also struck first in Rio. Arrascaeta converted a penalty won by Varela, then won another that Jorginho converted, before Flamengo conceded twice in extra time to lose 3-2.
According to Globo.com, the No 10, the club’s most decorated player, acknowledged supporters’ frustration as chants of “time sem vergonha” rang out after the final. He said the moment demands resilience, heads down and hard work, adding the team are not yet the Flamengo they want to be and that everyone must improve.
At the club since 2019, he has lived both extremes, including the 2021 Libertadores final defeat and a barren 2023. In 2025 he enjoyed the most prolific scoring season of his career, led Libertadores and Brasileirão triumphs, and added the Supercopa and the Carioca to reach 17 Flamengo trophies.
He maintained the squad are trying but things are not clicking, noting the team had no pre-season. He believes they can respond over the coming months, while accepting it will be very difficult.
The squad are unhappy with current form and internal pressure is likely to rise. Flamengo now turn to the Carioca, with a place in the final within reach after a 3-0 first-leg win over Madureira in the semi-final.
