With Arsenal having won the Premier League title on Tuesday night, the club and Islington Council have put plans in place for a parade later this month.

Islington residents have received letters informing them that if Arsenal win the Premier League (as they now have) or the Champions League, Islington will host a parade around the borough, starting from 14:00 BST on Sunday, May 31st.

The letter warns of large numbers of supporters in the local area, and disruption across the borough including road closures and parking suspensions. Further details of the route and closures will be announced closer to the time.

It’s not hard to believe that many will turn out for the parade, given the tens of thousands who flocked to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night with no plan, coordination, or warning.

There will be some disappointment among the matchgoing fans in Budapest the previous day, given the difficulties associated with getting back to London by 2pm without paying extortionate prices for direct morning flights.

Many will likely be on trains and in airports around the continent as the parade celebrations go on.

Those fans will hopefully find comfort in the form of being present for a first Champions League win in Arsenal’s history, but the outcome of that competition remains unknown.

The parade was always likely to be held on May 31st, as it’s the only realistic available date between the Champions League final and the upcoming internationals.

Any players called up for the World Cup, or for any pre-World Cup friendlies, will be joining up with their national teams on Monday, June 1st.

Regardless of the outcome in the Champions League, that Sunday will be a chance for the fans and players to share in the celebrations for their Premier League success before the international football gets going.
