Statement win over Bayern Munich in Champions League slightly marred by another key fitness setback for Gunners
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has provided an update after Leandro Trossard went off injured against Bayern Munich.
The Belgian winger was forced off seven minutes before half-time in Wednesday night’s 3-1 Champions League win at the Emirates Stadium.
Trossard, who scored in Sunday’s 4-1 north London derby victory over Tottenham, went straight down the tunnel after limping off the pitch having appeared to hurt his calf. His replacement, Noni Madueke, scored Arsenal’s second goal of the night.
After the game, Arteta was asked for an initial assessment of Trossard’s injury.
“With Leo, we don’t know [the extent of the injury],” he said. “He said he felt something. We didn’t want to take any risks, obviously.”
Trossard has popped up with some important goals for Arsenal this season, scoring five times in 15 appearances across all competitions so far for the Premier League and Champions League leaders.
The 30-year-old will undergo an injury assessment on Thursday to determine if he can be in contention for Sunday’s key showdown against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which will see first play second in the top-flight.
Arsenal got Martin Odegaard back from injury against Bayern, with their influential captain playing the final nine minutes off the bench as a replacement for weekend hat-trick hero Eberechi Eze having recovered from a knee issue suffered against West Ham in early October.
The Gunners remained without forwards Viktor Gyokeres (hamstring) and Kai Havertz (knee), both of whom Arteta said ahead of the game against Bayern he hoped would be in contention to face Chelsea.
Arsenal’s statement win on Wednesday night came without leading centre-back Gabriel, who will miss a period of weeks as a result of an adductor injury picked up playing for Brazil. He was due to undergo another scan on Wednesday.
Gabriel Jesus is now fit again and training fully after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that has kept him sidelined since January, though the striker is not in Arsenal’s Champions League squad for the league phase and looks set to be eased back into action in a specially-arranged behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney before being made available for the first team.
