Piero Hincapie heroic but Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka both struggle for impact in agonising shootout defeat

Arsenal fell agonisingly short of lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain.

The Gunners took an early lead through Kai Havertz and then spent much of the first period in their own half, defending resolutely. That was until Cristhian Mosquera rashly brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele converted from the spot.

It went all the way to a shootout. Eberechi Eze missed the target but David Raya then saved from Nuno Mendes. Gabriel had to score to force sudden death, but blasted over.

Standard Sport’s Matt Verri was at the Puskas Arena to rate the Arsenal players...

David Raya 7

Fortunate when he spilled a Fabian Ruiz shot that no PSG player was there. Poor distribution overall but great goalkeeping to charge off his line and smother when Bradley Barcola got in behind. Top penalty save from Mendes but did not get near the rest.

Cristhian Mosquera 6

Sensational in the first half against Kvaratskhelia, winning three early duels. Calm on the ball, too. But one rash moment proved costly, hacking down Kvaratskhelia for the penalty. Could have been a second yellow and was replaced immediately.

William Saliba 7

Physically dominated the PSG forwards when the crosses came in but found himself increasingly exposed at times late on when Kvaratskhelia and then Barcola broke. For once it looked like he did not have the legs.

Gabriel 8

Extraordinary in the 120 minutes. Eight clearances in the first half, throwing himself in the way of anything that moved. Not quite as all action as the match went on but did not put a foot wrong - until he blazed the decisive penalty over. Cruel on him.

Piero Hincapie 9

Massive effort against Desire Doue and got the better of him. Relentless pressing and locked down that flank for Arsenal. Hardly left his own half but faultless defensively. Played most of extra time on one leg - absolutely heroic.

Declan Rice 7

Quiet by his standards. Mopped up a couple of times to good effect but not quite the midfield general he so often is. No sign of his trademark bursts through midfield but tidy in front of the defence. Ruthless penalty.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 8

So brave. One brilliant driving run left Vitinha clasping at thin air. Caught on the ball by Doue but then charged back to make amends. Looked tired by the end of the 90 minutes but justified his selection.

Bukayo Saka 5

Put one good cross into the middle but otherwise struggled to get involved. Terrible moment when losing the ball to allow PSG to break and hit the post. Could not influence the match.

Martin Odegaard 6

Conducted the Arsenal press well but was unable to get on the ball and give his side some respite. Couple of loose passes and decisions when he just needed to hold it. Replaced midway through the second half.

Leandro Trossard 7

Rewarded for his hard work when charging down a clearance to send Havertz in behind. Brought some calm when drifting past challenges and settling Arsenal down in possession. Helped Hincapie so much.

Kai Havertz 8

So calm to run through on goal and smash the finish into the roof of the net. Lonely task leading the line and got nothing from the referee but ran himself ragged. Brilliant striker’s display.

Jurrien Timber (Mosquera 66’) 6

Understandably rusty at times with his decision-making. But grew into the game, particularly in attack. Turned really well into the box to get into space in extra time but halted by bizarre refereeing.

Viktor Gyokeres (Odegaard 66’) 6

Booked when losing the ball and running back to make a foul. Did not really make the ball stick. But cool as ever from the penalty spot.

Noni Madueke (Saka 83’) 8

Direct running to beat Mendes and had a huge shout for a penalty waved away. Added real drive and energy to the attack. Gave Mendes huge problems.

Gabriel Martinelli (Trossard 83’) 6

Big chance to play Madueke clean through but overhit the pass. Did well defensively though to help out the struggling Hincapie. Nerveless penalty.

Eberechi Eze (Havertz 91’) 4

Game passed him by - felt like he was a split-second off the pace in the final third. Then pulled an awful penalty wide of the target.

Martin Zubimendi (Lewis-Skelly 91’) 6

Diligent defensively, getting back to block crosses and get a foot in. Decent cameo at the end of an exhausting season.
