It’s the north London derby as Arsenal host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners currently sit top of the league, four points clear second-placed Manchester City. They will be eager to maintain the gap while simultaneously earning bragging rights against their bitter rivals.
Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Mosquera, Calafiori; Rice, Zubimendi; Saka, Eze, Trossard; Merino.
The game is set to kick off at 4:30pm and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.
Arsenal have suffered a real blow in their quest for a first Premier League title in more than two decades. Key defender Gabriel was forced off in Brazil’s friendly victory over Senegal at the Emirates Stadium during the international break.
Manager Mikel Arteta revealed on Friday that the centre-back will be out for ‘weeks’. Cristhian Mosquera is likely to be given the nod to deputise at the back ahead of fellow summer signing Piero Hincapie.
In positive news, striker Viktor Gyokeres is available to play. The Sweden international went off against Burnley at the start of November with a hamstring issue and has not featured since for club or country. With that in mind, Arteta may continue with midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift No.9, before bringing Gyokeres on to have an impact off the bench in the second half.
Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke have both been out with knee injuries, but could find themselves named in the matchday squad.
Riccardo Calafiori missed Italy’s matches against Moldova and Norway but is expected to be assessed and available to face Tottenham. That’s also the case for Jurrien Timber, who took a knock for the Netherlands.
If Eberechi Eze is eager to truly announce himself to the Arsenal faithful, a goal in the north London derby would be the perfect act.
The England international could have been lining up against the Gunners for Tottenham on Sunday. However, close to signing for Tottenham, the boyhood Arsenal fan called Mikel Arteta. Seeing clearly how much the Crystal Palace man wanted to move to the Emirates, a deal was hijacked and completed.
The 27-year-old has already scored past the Eagles, netting twice this season and assisting three more. A goal against Arsenal’s huge rivals and the club he nearly signed for would delight the Gunners faithful. And appeal to those who want to see more from the playmaker in the final third.
To show his importance, a derby goal is the ticket and would go a long way to showing Arteta’s men have the quality and squad depth to finish first come May.
