Arsenal’s preparations for their Premier League return against Fulham have taken a positive turn, with summer signing Piero Hincapie returning to full training. The Ecuadorian defender has been sidelined for much of the season but is now edging closer to a long-awaited comeback.

Hincapie’s time at Arsenal has been frustratingly brief so far, with the 22-year-old playing just one minute since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen on loan on deadline day. A groin problem sustained during pre-season surgery halted his integration into Mikel Arteta’s system, leaving Arsenal short of defensive depth at key moments.
The positive news for the Gunners is that Hincapie was back on the grass at London Colney on Thursday morning, participating in team training as he continues his recovery. “The defender has been struggling with a groin issue that has kept him out of action,” noted the Evening Standard, but his inclusion in sessions marks a significant step forward.
Arteta will be encouraged by the sight of Hincapie joining in drills, especially given the congested fixture list awaiting Arsenal over the next three weeks. With seven games in 22 days, including Champions League duties against Atletico Madrid, squad rotation will be vital if Arsenal are to maintain their pace in the Prem.
Arsenal’s season so far has been marked by a mix of strong results and fitness frustrations. While their title challenge remains intact, recurring injuries have limited Arteta’s options. Hincapie’s absence has been felt particularly in central defence, where Gabriel and William Saliba have shouldered the bulk of the minutes.
The Gunners face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday before a pivotal European tie in midweek. The packed schedule leaves little time for recovery, and Arteta knows he must carefully manage his resources.
“Arteta will look to rotate his squad during that time and the return of Hincapie will ease the workload on the defence,” the report added. The manager has been keen to balance intensity in training with the need for freshness in matches, an approach that becomes even more critical during this demanding spell.

While Hincapie’s return provides a welcome boost, not all of Thursday’s training session brought positive updates. Ben White was notably absent, sparking mild concern among supporters ahead of the weekend’s game. Martin Zubimendi, meanwhile, was seen watching on from the sidelines alongside Andrea Berta.
The Spanish midfielder, who joined Arsenal earlier this year, has been a steady presence in midfield since arriving, and Arteta will be hopeful his omission was precautionary. Both players could still feature against Fulham if they pass late fitness checks.
Arteta has previously emphasised the importance of his squad’s adaptability during periods of intense competition. He often points to players like Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jakub Kiwior, whose versatility across defensive roles has proven invaluable during injury crises.
Arsenal’s injury challenges have tested the squad’s depth, yet the team remains within touching distance of the top of the Prem table. The ability to grind out results, even when key players are unavailable, has become a defining trait under Arteta’s leadership.
Hincapie’s reintroduction comes at an opportune time, with the Ecuadorian bringing pace and composure that suit Arsenal’s possession-based approach. His ball progression from defence was a key factor in his success at Leverkusen, and Arteta is likely eager to harness that quality in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s defensive organisation has occasionally wavered under fatigue, particularly during high-intensity matches, and the manager will see Hincapie’s recovery as a chance to recalibrate. With a combination of youth, energy and tactical intelligence, the defender could become a crucial piece in Arsenal’s pursuit of domestic and European success.
Arteta’s side travel to Fulham seeking to maintain momentum and ensure their injury situation improves rather than worsens. A victory would keep pressure on rivals and continue their strong form heading into the winter schedule.
