Mohammed Salisu has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, sustained at the end of AS Monaco’s 3-1 defeat to Lyon at Louis-II on Saturday night. According to Nice-Matin, the 26-year-old Ghana international was injured on an innocuous action in second-half stoppage time.
The former Southampton defender felt pain again on Sunday and subsequent tests confirmed the worst diagnosis, meaning he will be out for several months.
The setback deepens Monaco’s injury woes. Takumi Minamino had already suffered the same left ACL rupture just before Christmas during their Coupe de France round of 64 win at Auxerre, 2-1.
Salisu has now seriously jeopardised his chances of playing at the World Cup with Ghana next summer, 11 June to 19 July.
Against OL, Sébastien Pocognoli and his staff could not call on Ansu Fati, Pape Cabral, hamstring, Paul Pogba, calf, Vanderson, quadriceps, and Minamino, all injured. The team sit ninth in Ligue 1, nine points off the top three and the top four that secure Champions League qualification.
During the Lyon match, goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky sustained a knee sprain and defender Christian Mawissa a hamstring problem, both departing before half-time. They will miss several matches.
