AS Roma and AC Milan clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening in an important fixture in the Serie A title race, with both teams vying for a place in the top four.
The Giallorossi will be searching for a fifth clean sheet in six matches, while the Rossoneri aim to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches and maintain their assault on the league summit.
Roma have excelled since Gian Piero Gasperini’s arrival, and manager Massimiliano Allegri has acknowledged the threat posed by this weekend’s opponents.
The Roman outfit will be without Mario Hermoso, striker Artem Dovbyk, and Stephan El Shaarawy due to injury, whilst Gianluca Mancini and Evan Ferguson sustained minor knocks during their Europa League victory over Stuttgart.
However, new signing Donyell Malen, who arrived from Aston Villa on loan with an obligation to buy for €25 million, might start in place of Ferguson after an impressive Serie A debut against Torino, where he scored immediately and impressed alongside Paulo Dybala.
Milan will assess the fitness of Alexis Saelemaekers ahead of the match. The Belgian winger, who suffered a left adductor issue during the victory over Lecce, is “feeling better” according to Allegri, and the coach will evaluate whether he can start. Santiago Gimenez remains ruled out through injury, whilst Strahinja Pavlovic has only recently recovered from a head injury and may not be at full match fitness.
New signing Niclas Füllkrug made an impact, scoring with a well-taken header against Lecce in the 76th minute. The German striker’s arrival provides additional firepower alongside Rafael Leão, who has been in superb form this season.
The Giallorossi defeated Torino 2-0 away from home with the outstanding Matías Soulé scoring one goal and assisting another, whilst Dybala added the second. They come to this match after a 2-0 victory against VFB Stuttgart in the UEFA Europa League. Roma have won four out of their last five matches in all competitions, and in all four wins, they have kept a clean sheet.
Milan secured an important 1-0 triumph over Lecce at San Siro, with Füllkrug’s decisive header maintaining their position within touching distance of leaders Inter. The Rossoneri remain unbeaten in 20 consecutive Serie A games — their longest such streak since 2004/05 under Carlo Ancelotti — comprising 13 victories and seven draws.
AS Roma: Svilar; Mancini, Ndicka, Ghilardi; Celik, Cristante, Kone, Wesley; Soule, Dybala; Malen
AC Milan: Maignan; Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic; Saelemaekers, Fofana, Modric, Rabiot, Bartesaghi; Pulisic, Leao
