Leaders Porto and second-placed Sporting responded to Benfica’s dramatic win in Madeira against Nacional on Saturday night by beating Estoril and Estrela da Amadora respectively on Sunday.
The Blue & Whites were far from their fluid best and were made to sweat for the three points by Estoril at the Estádio do Dragão, as shown by the final shot count (8-8) and corners won (5-3 in Porto’s favour).
Nevertheless, it was the hosts who created the better chances and an early goal by William Gomes made it 11 wins and one draw from 12 games for Francesco Farioli’s team, who remain three points clear at the top of the table.
There were no such struggles for Sporting who continued their excellent form with a 4-0 thrashing of Estrela da Amadora at Alvalade. The Lions were three goals up by the 25th minutes thanks to strikes by Eduardo Quaresma, Luis Suárez and Ivan Fresneda. Suárez added a fourth in the second half.
Despite the ferocious pace set by Porto, the reigning Portuguese champions have kept in touch with the Dragons, but face a stern test of their championship credentials next Friday when they make the short trip to the other side of the Segunda Circular to take on Benfica at the Estádio da Luz.
