It’s known that Danilho Doekhi (27) won’t be playing Bundesliga football at Union Berlin next season after confirming that he would not be extending his contract with the capital club.
One of the Bundesliga’s best performing defenders over the course of the last 18 months, Leeds United are hopeful of signing Doekhi, but the West Yorkshire club face competition from Premier League rivals to confirm the Dutchman’s signature.
According to a report by Kicker, Aston Villa have now joined the race to sign Doekhi, who has played every single minute of Bundesliga football this season, returning four goals, and notably scoring a brace against Bayern Munich.
Resigned to losing Doekhi on a free transfer in the summer, Union are prepared to cash in on their prized asset in the current transfer window, but only if they receive a suitable offer.
With Hoffenheim loanee Stanley Nsoki fit again, Steffen Baumgart does have a defensive replacement, but it’s likely that Union would enter the transfer market in some form, whether that’s a permanent transfer or another loan signing for the remainder of the season.
Per Transfermarkt, Doekhi’s market value sits at €13m.
