The 54-year-old was put in caretaker charge following former boss Robert de Pauw’s departure last month. Goater has successfully steered Aston Villa to three consecutive wins in which they have scored 16 goals.
Goater’s Aston Villa will be looking to chalk up a fourth win when they travel to Everton this weekend. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, The Villans’ caretaker boss stated his intentions when it comes to the permanent head coach position.
“Certainly, yes, [I’d like the job],” Goater said. “The answer is very clear, yes. I am enjoying it but at the same time, it’s game-by-game.
“The players are excited, they are confident, they have smiles on their faces and that’s the most important thing. We want to get the players playing the Villa way, enjoying their football and looking to produce good performances and results.”
While Goater would like the job permanently, there is no decision in sight. He says that he is working on a game-by-game basis until told otherwise.
He said “The situation really is that it’s game-by-game. Each game, we are doing well and we are enjoying it. I would enjoy it no matter what the case was but it’s game-by-game and so we look forward to Everton and putting on a good performance.”
This weekend’s opponents Everton are a side that Goater respects from his time working at Manchester City. The Blue Girls are adaptable in their game plan and Goater says that Aston Villa are prepared for whatever is in-front of them on Merseyside.
He said “It’s going to be interesting. They had a really good game against [Manchester] City, they played a low block because City dominate the ball. In a number of games when I was at City, they played really open, a bit of a different strategy and it worked for them. Whether they decide to go with a low block again or whether they challenge us and make it a more open game, we have a plan for both and we will address that as the game goes on. When I saw the result [against Manchester City], I thought it was a huge result from their point of view.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Everton kicks-off at 5.30pm on Saturday evening.
