English news outlet Birmingham Mail reported that Manchester United secured the signing of Senne Lammens for £18.2 million, despite Aston Villa trying hard to sign the Belgian goalkeeper for the West Midlands club. Marc Overmars, Royal Antwerp’s sporting director, described how the negotiations unfolded
He explained that while Aston Villa had struck a deal, the player himself resisted the move and made it clear he wanted Old Trafford. According to Overmars, Villa had lined up Lammens as Emiliano Martinez’s possible replacement. There was constant speculation over the Argentine’s future. However, once United made their move, everything changed. He explained that United first offered less than Villa, but pressed on through deadline day and struck a deal within hours.
For Aston Villa, the twist carried further significance. They had anticipated Martinez’s possible departure during the summer transfer window. Instead, Martinez stayed put, and his continued presence softened the impact of losing Lammens.
Yet the decision highlighted the goalkeeper’s ambitions, as he ignored Villa’s superior offer in favour of a move to a club he clearly believed aligned with his long-term aspirations. For United fans, the episode reinforced the draw of their badge, while for Villa, it was a stark reminder of the pull that certain clubs retain, even in fiercely competitive markets.
Marc Overmars said via Birmingham Mail, “When Manchester United wanted Senne Lammens, we said, ‘Listen, we’re not Brighton or Brentford, with whom you have to negotiate for weeks’. With us, things have to move quickly.
“With Manchester United, we started as losers on deadline day. We had a deal with Aston Villa, but Martinez still had to leave – and Senne didn’t want to go there. Only then did Man Utd make a first offer, lower than Aston Villa’s. Four hours later, we finally reached an agreement.”

Seeing a promising 23-year-old goalkeeper commit to Old Trafford rather than Aston Villa shows clearly how ambition and vision shaped his choice. Villa may have believed they could secure a long-term successor to Martinez, but the Belgian refused to join, which showed he wanted a different path.
The financial details made the story more interesting. Reports said Villa offered Antwerp a more attractive package, yet the player still prioritised the stature of United. This choice showed that Villa cannot always sign players aiming for bigger stages, even when money tilts in their favour.
In the bigger picture, Villa now must answer questions about their succession planning. They could trust their academy, where young goalkeepers such as Oliwier Zych, James Wright, Sam Proctor, and Ronnie Hollingshead look to prove themselves. Zych has shown promising signs so far.
They could pursue another emerging option abroad, identifying someone under 25 with a trajectory similar to Lammens, or they might eventually consider experienced names from the Premier League or Championship. They need men eager for minutes and capable of delivering immediately. This news comes as reports say Aston Villa won’t sack Unai Emery, and Atletico Madrid are considering Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. Since Martinez remains, Villa have some breathing space, but missing out on Lammens means they must stay alert in case things change.
