Aston Villa succumbed to their seventh defeat in their last nine Premier League games on the road. The Villains were given a 4-1 chastening away at Crystal Palace.
Villa were all over the place, and a rampant Palace attack capitalised on their disjointed play. Several Villa players were not up to par.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez did not cover himself in glory in the Villa rearguard. Another player particularly criticised for a horrendous showing was Axel Disasi.
The Frenchman had a day to forget. He was given the run around by the Palace attacking line. The Chelsea defender (on loan at the Birmingham club since January) won only three of his seven ground and two of four aerial duels.
Aston Villa News gave Disasi a 3/10 player rating for his poor display, with the outlet saying, “Could have been closer to (Jean-Philippe) Mateta for a chance the striker should have done better with, then beaten by (Eberechi) Eze and not close enough to the striker for the second Palace goal.”
Disasi was not directly at fault for any goal Villa conceded but was inept and positionally unaware, leaving the rearguard vulnerable.
Talk Villa said, “Slow reaction and movement was punished as the Villa defence was cut through and pulled apart, was part of our problems at the back as we were not good enough defensively throughout.”
Chelsea fans know all about Disasi and his positional problems. He struggles to understand where to be to cut out danger, much to the detriment of his team.
After delivering good performances in his first few games, a few fans were already talking about keeping him permanently at Villa, but this was a stark reminder that there was a reason he was down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The coming games against Cardiff City, Club Brugge, and Brentford will be opportunities to judge Disasi and see whether Villa should try to sign him permanently or start looking for new defensive targets for the summer transfer window.
