Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says the club were “not convinced” about signing Harvey Elliott (22) permanently, despite the midfielder joining on loan from Liverpool earlier this season.

Elliott arrived at Villa in September on a season-long loan that includes an obligation to buy for £35m if he plays 10 Premier League games. However, the 22-year-old has featured only five times in all competitions and has started just one league match.

Speaking on Friday and transcribed by BBC Sport, Emery admitted Villa had already decided against committing to the permanent transfer.

The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan, and if he plays matches we must buy him,” Emery said. “Two months ago we decided we are not convinced to sign him, spending the money we would need.

Elliott’s last appearance came as a late substitute in the Europa League in October. Despite his lack of game time, Emery praised the player’s attitude, saying he continues to train well and behaves professionally.

This is not something good for him and not good for us,” Emery added. “But this is football and sometimes decisions are not good for everyone.

BBC Sport understands MLS side Charlotte FC, coached by former Villa manager Dean Smith, are interested in Elliott, though the player is not keen on a move to the United States. A return to Liverpool is also possible, but there is no recall clause in the loan deal.

Elliott, who helped England Under-21s win the European Championship last summer, now faces an uncertain future as Villa look for a solution before the end of the transfer window.
