Three Premier League giants are keeping tabs on AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara this summer, and the 22-year-old Senegal international may well be one of the most contested transfers before the window closes. According to Media Foot, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are the frontrunners in the race, with all three clubs reportedly ready to invest heavily to sign him. Monaco signed Camara from FC Metz in July 2024 for €15m, and his rapid growth across 71 appearances for the Ligue 1 side has inflated his value considerably.

Reports from as recently as May 2026 value Camara at approximately €40-50 million, though Monaco’s consistent asking price through March to May 2026 has been set in a higher €65-75 million range, with one rumour suggesting a rival club was willing to spend up to €85 million. Monaco are set for a fire sale of key players this summer after a disappointing campaign that will see them play in the UEFA Conference League. That financial pressure hands interested clubs some advantage, even if it is likely to remain a competitive and expensive chase.

Aston Villa face stiff competition in the Premier League

Newcastle officials have made repeated visits to France throughout 2026 to observe the Senegal international, and there is a growing belief within football circles that Camara is destined to move to St James’ Park this summer. Liverpool have also been strongly linked, so the field is far broader than just three clubs. Camara is said to personally favour a move to either Spurs or Aston Villa, placing the Magpies in a position where they may need to work harder to persuade him. A move to Villa Park will offer Champions League football, a factor that is important for a player with serious ambitions.

This is where the question gets genuinely interesting. Fresh from Europa League glory, Villa’s hierarchy are ready to back Emery with a transfer budget worth up to £100m as the club prepare for another assault on Europe’s elite competition next season. The budget is there. The Champions League place is secured. But does Emery truly need Camara?

Villa’s current midfield contains Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara, both outstanding performers in recent seasons, with Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley as able deputies. Douglas Luiz returned on loan but struggled to rediscover his best form, making just 12 Premier League starts, and his future appears to lie elsewhere. That departure creates a real gap. Camara is athletic, defensively responsible and capable of playing as a six or an eight, which aligns precisely with what Emery demands from a modern central midfielder.

With Champions League football confirmed, a player of Camara’s technical and physical profile would arrive into a squad with genuine depth and a manager who consistently develops midfielders into elite talents. Ilaix Moriba of Celta Vigo is also being considered for Villa’s central midfield, suggesting Emery is actively scouting this position.

Camara, however, represents a significantly higher ceiling. Letting him pass and settling for cheaper alternatives would be a pragmatic but arguably shortsighted decision for a club that now operate at the very top level. For Aston Villa, this summer is about building on Europa League glory, and Camara could be central to that next step.
