Aston Villa are monitoring Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey and could consider a summer move after his Tyne-Wear derby winner.
The 24-year-old has impressed in his first Premier League season under Régis Le Bris, capped by a late winner at Newcastle United. He has six goals and one assist from 24 league outings, and his hold-up play and willingness to run the channels have drawn praise. Interest is growing in England and Europe.
Villa are believed to want another centre-forward amid concerns over consistency in front of goal. Ollie Watkins remains a leading option and Tammy Abraham arrived in the winter window, yet further reinforcements are still being explored.
“Aston Villa are looking to sign a new striker in the summer,” said former Villa scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider.
“They’ve been frustrated with Watkins and the other options because they haven’t had that regular goalscorer, so they’re looking at a few options. Brian Brobbey is somebody they will have been looking at, because there’s always interest in players, strikers particularly, who are making a bit of a name for themselves.”
“Sunderland did a fantastic job with their recruitment in the summer, and it’s been a really strong season for them, and Brobbey has been very impressive. He’s strong, will back into defenders, battle them, fight them, run in behind, and he’ll score goals as well. So for a side like Aston Villa, that sort of centre-forward is going to be somebody who takes their fancy and I’m sure they’ll be keeping a close eye on him.”
