Aston Villa welcome Newcastle United to Villa Park in a fascinating fourth-round FA Cup tie.
Having watched Newcastle end their long wait for a major trophy with League Cup success last season, The Villans are seeking to end a 30-year drought of their own.
Unai Emery’s options are stretched in midfield with Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara all ruled out. The return of Douglas Luiz in January has boosted the club’s stocks, while Ross Barkley is also back from injury.
Matty Cash and Andres Garcia are not expected to feature, so Lamare Bogard should deputise at right-back. In attack, it’s a straight selection choice between Ollie Watkins and January recruit, Tammy Abraham.
Newcastle are also short in midfield with Bruno Guimaraes adding to Eddie Howe’s headache in midweek. The captain is a major doubt, while Joelinton has been ruled out. Starting in midfield could be Jacob Ramsey, against his former club. Ramsey was on target during Tuesday’s win at Tottenham. Elsewhere, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth remain out.
Aston Villa have won four of their last six in all competitions, following a 1-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League in midweek. That run also includes a 2-0 win at Newcastle in the league, a result that strengthened their grip on a Champions League place. Villa, who eliminated Spurs in the FA Cup’s third round, are unbeaten in their last three against Newcastle.
Eddie Howe’s side secured a morale-boosting win at Tottenham in midweek to end a five-game winless run. The Magpies are 10th in the Premier League, having struggled to juggle the dual commitment of league and Champions League football. Their form on the road has been particularly poor. Newcastle have won just three of their 13 Premier League games away from home.
Aston Villa: Bizot; Bogarde, Lindelof, Torres, Digne; Onana, Luiz; Bailey, Rogers, Buendia; Abraham.
Newcastle: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Willock, Tonali, Ramsey; Barnes, Wissa, Gordon.
The match will be broadcast on BBC 1 and TNT Sports 3 in the UK.
