Manchester City must decide the future of one of their most skilled players, Mateo Kovačić. The Croatian midfielder once served as a reliable link between defence and attack, but has drifted out of Pep Guardiola’s plans.
His influence, once steady, fades as younger players and tactical changes take priority. The rumours started quietly, but a recent Daily Briefing exclusive from journalist Marc Brus revealed that City have no plans to offer him a new contract, and that silence tells its own story.
Several Premier League clubs have already noticed his situation. West Ham United and Aston Villa value his experience and composure. City recognise that he plays less often now, so they will welcome potential offers. Yet sources claim AC Milan lead the chase from abroad.
Kovačić sees a return to Serie A, where he once thrived, as a familiar and comfortable move. Meanwhile, we reported earlier that Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign Luis Milla, showing that the club aims to refresh their midfield. At the same time, Villa plan to tie down their captain, John McGinn, amidst interest from Celtic. That approach shows that Eemery wants to secure his key players before reshaping the team.

Despite their interest, a January move to Villa Park seems unlikely. Unai Emery builds his team on energy and discipline. His midfielders work tirelessly and defend with awareness. Kovačić, now 31 years old, does bring control and skill, but he doesn’t match the high-tempo, pressing style that Emery demands from his players. His injury record also raises doubts about his ability to maintain intensity throughout the season.
The Croat’s intelligence and technical abilities could strengthen the squad, yet the timing of the move feels wrong to us. Emery usually plans for the future and prefers younger players who can grow within his system. He avoids quick mid-season adjustments. Kovačić deserves regular football, but Villa may choose a player who fits their current setup more naturally. For now, the interest stays discreet, and the Croatian midfielder looks more likely to continue his career abroad.
