Boro's win at Bramall Lane sent them top of the Championship table, two points clear of former runaway leaders Coventry City, who have let their grip on an automatic promotion spot slip.

The Riverside Stadium club's triumph in the Steel City came thanks to goals from Conway and Riley McGree, while Patrick Bamford's well-crafted finish turned out to be mere consolation for Chris Wilder's men, whose momentum was thwarted by Joe Rothwell's red card.

Middlesbrough face Coventry in their next game on Monday, 16 February, and will be determined to extend their lead over the Sky Blues.

Conway's strike at Sheffield United took the forward's return to seven goals and two assists in 31 Championship appearances this season, and more importantly, led Kim Hellberg's men to their sixth consecutive league win.

Taking to Instagram after the final whistle, the 23-year-old posted: "Special win. Special group. We go again."

His message caught the attention of fellow Scotland international and Aston Villa star John McGinn, who tagged Matt Targett, writing: "Flying tam, we going to talk about the shot?" which seemingly referenced the moment when Conway missed the ball as he attempted to score a second goal.

The left-back once again proved his worth for Middlesbrough, successfully keeping dangerous Blades duo Andre Brooks and Femi Seriki quiet for the most part.

Middlesbrough firmly in the driving seat in Championship title race

Boro's strong form has been unrelenting in recent weeks, as proven by the fact that they have now won six games in a row in the Championship, despite the fiercely competitive nature of the second tier.

Sheffield United proved their class by scoring an excellent goal, which saw both Kalvin Phillips and Gustavo Hamer show off their respective passing ranges before Bamford fired his shot past Sol Brynn, who was otherwise impenetrable on Monday.

However, Hellberg's side saw the game out well and earned a vital three points.

In contrast to Boro's resurgent run, former league leaders Coventry have suffered a three-game winless run, which has included 2-1 defeats to both Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers.

The Sky Blues have mustered just two wins in their last nine games across all competitions, suggesting that Middlesbrough have what it takes to beat Frank Lampard's men next week, especially after their impressive display at Bramall Lane.

If Hellberg's side defeat Coventry and establish a five-point lead at the top of the Championship table, they appear highly likely to go on and lift the title.

The CBS Arena outfit showed a lack of cutting edge once again on Saturday, when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Oxford United, even though Matt Bloomfield's men are four points adrift of safety.

On current form, the likes of Conway, McGree, Morgan Whittaker, and Hayden Hackney will be looking forward to proving their attacking prowess for Boro against the Sky Blues.
