Cristiano Giuntoli is pushing to reunite with Savona at Atalanta, with direct negotiations under way with Nottingham Forest, a move that could impact Inter’s pursuit of Marco Palestra.

According to Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, contacts are ongoing between Atalanta and Forest over the former Juventus right-back, who joined the Premier League side permanently last summer for €13 million plus €2.5 million in bonuses.

Giuntoli worked closely with Nicolò Savona at Juventus and is keen to bring the Italian back to Serie A as he shapes incoming head coach Maurizio Sarri’s squad for next season.

The ramifications could extend beyond Bergamo. Palestra also plays at right-back and Savona’s arrival could provide the positional cover that would allow Atalanta to consider a sale.

Inter have agreed personal terms with Palestra on a five-year deal worth around €2 million per season, but Atalanta are holding firm at €50 million and have already rejected an opening proposal of €45 million.

Manchester City remain in the background, with Enzo Maresca an admirer of Palestra’s profile. Whether Savona’s signing proves the key to unlock the wider operation remains to be seen.
