Ivan Juric had been under serious scrutiny since their maiden loss to Udinese, and, while Atalanta grabbed a precious win over Olympique Marseille in the Champions League, the ugly display versus Sassuolo prompted the management to pull the plug on the coach and will hand the reins to Raffaele Palladino.
The Croat edged out Thiago Motta, who would have been more expensive, last summer, Corriere della Sera informs. La Dea avoided defeats until the 10th round, but they drew a bunch. They sit in 13th place, nine points away from the top four Champions League. The boss never seemingly gelled with the players and recently had a public skirmish with Ademola Lookman.
After Juric, Atalanta will turn to another Gian Piero Gasperini disciple in Raffaele Palladino. He resigned from Fiorentina last summer after finishing 8th, reportedly due to disagreements with the management.
He has been linked to a quick reunion with the Viola following Stefano Pioli’s ousting, but it didn’t come together. He’ll sign a contract until 2027. He had a successful run at Monza before moving to Tuscany.
It wasn’t the most ambitious hire they could make, but it could have worked, had he managed to convey his ideas and make the squad play as tough as his Torino sides, where he had a lot less talent. It rarely ever happened for whatever reason. It quickly became apparent why the latter didn’t push to go back to the Viola, as he had a better opportunity lined up. While it’s not necessarily a massive upgrade, he’s more proactive, empathetic, and flexible and less stern than his predecessor, which gives him a better chance to get his message across.
