Cole Palmer’s chronic groin injury will rule him out until November at least, the latest reports are saying.

Simon Johnson’s piece for the Athletic claims that the attacker will not be back after the international break, and will in fact miss the rest of this month.

The path that took Palmer to critical point

Cole Palmer holds his groin against Bayern Munich.

We had already sort of assumed this, getting a few clues from all over.

Firstly there was the face Palmer made after 98 minutes of the game against Bayern Munich which you can see above – that’s a guy with a chronic groin problem.

Then there was the face he made on Saturday when Jorrel Hato jumped on him – not the face you make when you’re close to a return.

The biggest clue of all was what England manager Thomas Tuchel said last week when announcing his England squad. He gave us more detail on Palmer than Enzo Maresca had.

All of that pointed to an issue that was much worse than what was being let on, and so it’s proved.

Meeting concludes with demand for rest for Palmer

The “meeting” whose results we were all waiting for has confirmed that Palmer will be out until November.

He will miss the return to action after the international break against Nottingham Forest next week, the home game against Ajax in midweek in the Champions League, Sunderland in the league and then the trip to Wolves to finish the month.

Nobody really knows if he’ll be ready after that – but it seems a sensibly long period to rest him. We assume he will warm up with some training later this month and see how he gets on.

Now we just have to wait and see how we cope without our main playmaker in that period.
