Well, the second most important part of this year is back on track, baby!
The transfer market is open and ready for business. Over the last couple of days, we’ve discussed plenty of signings being completed for this second part of the regular season.
Last month, we reported that Atlanta United had everything fixed to sign Paulo Diaz, a River Plate defender. However, in the prior hours, the Five Stripes made another move for a different defender.
In this case, he disputed the World Cup with his nation, losing to France in the knockout rounds.
That’s right, Atlanta United wants to turn around what has been a poor start to the season, with the club currently sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference.
To do so, the first thing the Five Stripes need to address is their defense, as they have a negative goal difference of 10. However, the attack is another major problem, but we will talk about that another time.
Now, according to Atlanta United, the team announced it has signed defender Júnior Alonso through the 2028-29 season.
Alonso arrives after playing every match with Paraguay at the FIFA World Cup. Despite Paraguay's elimination in the Round of 16, Alonso reached a significant milestone by helping his team defeat Germany and advance beyond the group stage.
After two seasons with Atletico Mineiro, the Paraguayan defender arrived at Atlanta with 240 matches played on his back, recording four goals and seven assists.
This year, before the international tournament, he played 19 games without scoring. Atlanta chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said this about his new signing:
“Júnior is a hard-working defender who will help add solidity and stability to our backline. He’s a natural leader, reads the game very well, and brings great experience from South America and Europe at the club and international level, recently representing Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We’re excited to welcome him to Atlanta.”
Regardless of what the sporting director says, I have to be honest with you. I watched him both in Brazil and at Boca Juniors during the final years of the 33-year-old veteran's career, and he leaves a lot to be desired when deployed as a left back.
However, as a center back, he provides much more solidity than he does out wide.
Still, Atlanta is bringing in a player with vast experience at the highest level, someone who has thrived in nearly every tactical system. Adapting to a new setup in MLS should pose no challenge for him.
