Atlético Madrid left it late on Thursday night before José Giménez’s 90th-minute winner secured all three points in a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig.
Goals from Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Sesko ensured that the home side came out the victors in a clash which saw the hosts dominate their German counterparts in everything but the scoreline.
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone spoke to the press following his side’s win, and touched upon the fact that the new Champions League format meant his side had to chase a goal until the very end.
‘This format forces us to win, today a draw is of little use.‘ The Argentinian coach said as reported by Marca, possibly hinting at a change of attitude when it comes to his style of play in European competition.
Simeone was highly complimentary of his whole squad, saying ‘We played the game in different ways and with different players. The players interpreted it well and we got a much-needed win.‘
Atlético Madrid’s next European tie will be a trip to Portugal, where they will face Benfica in Lisbon, who won their match away at Red Star Belgrade.
