Girona welcome Atlético Madrid to the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Sunday in a crucial La Liga fixture.
The home side is locked in a relegation scrap, while Diego Simeone’s men arrive in Catalonia looking to extend their impressive recent run of three straight victories in all competitions.
Atlético have put together a solid league campaign so far, occupying fourth place with 34 points from 17 matches, having registered 10 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats.
Their latest league outing was a hard-fought 2-1 success over Valencia, a match in which Koke and Antoine Griezmann produced decisive moments to get Simeone’s side over the line.
Central defender José María Giménez is nursing a hamstring injury and is at serious risk of missing out.
At the same time, Alex Baena is also in doubt due to a similar issue in midfield. At the back, Clément Lenglet is ruled out with a knee injury and is expected to remain sidelined until around January after tests confirmed he faces several weeks on the sidelines.
On a more positive note, Koke’s level in the middle of the park has been a major plus recently, and Marcos Llorente is tipped to be available and in contention to feature. Speaking about Llorente’s condition before the game, Simeone commented that “he looked in good shape” in training and that a final decision on whether he starts would be taken on the eve of the match, adding that he believes the player is ready to play.
Possible Atletico Madrid starting XI: Oblak; Molina, Pubill, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Barrios, Koke, Gonzalez; Sorloth, Alvarez.
The match will kick off at 1pm BST on Sunday, 21st December.
In the United Kingdom, the showdown between Girona and Atlético Madrid will be shown live on Sky Sports and DAZN.
