Augsburg beat Werder Bremen 3-1 at the Weserstadion on Matchday 32 after Anton Kade scored twice and Kristijan Jakić added a third in the second half. The result means Manuel Baum's side are now just three points beyond Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg.

Bremen welcomed back captain Marco Friedl after he had served a red card suspension, with Niklas Stark dropping to the bench. For Augsburg, Chrislain Matsima made his first start of 2026, having made a brief comeback as a substitute the previous week.

Bremen started the brighter of the two sides, enjoying the lion's share of possession and pressing Augsburg back into their own half. Jovan Milošević and Romano Schmid both went close in the opening exchanges, while Yukinari Sugawara's deflected effort from range narrowly missed the post. Augsburg, however, were content to sit deep and wait for their moment. It arrived on 24 minutes, when Alexis Claude-Maurice won the ball in his own half with a sliding tackle and the visitors broke at pace. Fabian Rieder drove forward and found Michael Gregoritsch, who threaded a precise pass into the path of Kade inside the box. Kade kept his composure and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give Augsburg a deserved lead against the run of play. Han-Noah Massengo had already been booked in the 14th minute for a foul on Schmid, and was withdrawn in the 37th minute - replaced by Kristijan Jakić - to avoid the risk of a second yellow card.

Bremen continued to press for an equaliser and created a number of half-chances, but Augsburg's defence held firm. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen required treatment for a leg injury around the half-hour mark but was able to continue. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, Augsburg struck again. Dimitrios Giannoulis combined with Claude-Maurice down the left flank before delivering a cross into the Bremen box. Kade timed his run perfectly and headed the ball into the corner from close range, giving Mio Backhaus no chance. It was a sucker punch for the hosts, who had dominated the ball throughout the half but had little to show for it. Bremen went in at the break trailing 0-2, having had 62 per cent of possession but failing to truly test Dahmen.

Daniel Thioune responded at the interval with a triple substitution, bringing on Samuel Mbangula, Justin Njinmah and Salim Musah in place of Cameron Puertas, Milošević and Karim Coulibaly. The changes had an immediate impact, with Njinmah breaking clear in a one-on-one situation against Dahmen in the 48th minute, only for the Augsburg goalkeeper to produce a crucial save. A goal was then disallowed when Mbangula was adjudged to be in an offside position before the cross. Bremen's pressure eventually told in the 64th minute when Schmid fired home from around 25 yards after Dahmen had parried Musah's effort, with Olivier Deman providing the assist with a clever back-heel. Dahmen got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out.

Just as Bremen sensed a comeback, Augsburg responded immediately. Manuel Baum had introduced Marius Wolf, Arthur Chaves and Rodrigo Ribeiro in the 66th and 67th minutes, and the substitutes made an instant contribution. In the 69th minute, Claude-Maurice curled in a corner from the left, Wolf flicked the ball on at the near post, and Jakić was on hand at the back post to tap home and restore Augsburg's two-goal advantage. The goal effectively ended the contest. Marco Grüll, introduced late on for Yukinari Sugawara, struck the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 90th minute, but Bremen could not find a second goal. Keven Schlotterbeck had also come on for Matsima in the 75th minute, while Friedl received a yellow card in the 76th minute for a foul on Ribeiro. Augsburg saw out the remaining minutes comfortably to claim all three points.

Kade was the standout performer on the day, earning the Man of the Match award with 63 per cent of the vote. The Augsburg midfielder scored twice — first slotting home from close range after a slick counter-attack, then heading in from seven metres in stoppage time - and won a match-high 17 challenges.
His brace proved decisive in a match where Augsburg's clinical finishing contrasted sharply with Bremen's wastefulness in front of goal.
