FC Augsburg head coach Sandro Wagner – having already apologized profusely after his team’s last embarrassing home Bundesliga defeat – opted for a different approach on Saturday afternoon. Whether or not the popular player who remains something of a novice at the top German footballing level can explain away a 0-6 thrashing remains to be seen.
Simply states, Wagner’s Fuggerstädter failed to show up against RB Leipzig in the latest home debacle. The 37-year-old attempted to make the case that simple errors at the beginning of the match created a snowball effect. Unlike in previous instances Wagner didn’t appear prepared to take personal responsibility.
“A coaching job would be great if everything that one addresses is executed,” Wagner remarked at the post-match press conference. “Behind all the structural stuff, there’s always an individual story. How do I defend strongly in the box? How do I mark effectively? How do I block shots? There’s a lot of psychology to football and when one falls behind 0-1 and 0-2 early, it affects you.
“And that’s what we need to address in the coming weeks,” Wagner continued. “That we remain clear-headed and stabile. That we keep paying attention to details. We’ll prioritize that and proceed along this path. Hopefully, the attention to detail will pay off. It wasn’t anything new today. We’ve had problems defending in the last couple of games.
“Yes,” Wagner relied when asked if believed he had 100 percent job-security. “We [the team and club management] have solid daily discussions and know which way we want to proceed. We know that there can be some breakdowns along the way.
“We want to see how players like Noahkai Banks, Chrislain Matsima, Han Noah Massengo, Anton Kade and everyone else develops,” Wagner concluded. “We’ll prioritize that and move forward.“
