Kaitlyn Torpey
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Australian international defender Kaitlyn Torpey.
In quotes distributed to the media, Torpey said: “It’s very surreal being here and getting it all sorted, but I’m very excited to get started.
“I’ve had a little break now, and I’m excited to get my boots back on and get out there for the club. It is a big second half of the season, so I’m excited to work. With Newcastle, you can tell they are growing quickly so it’s an exciting project.”
Manager Tanya Oxtoby said: “We’re delighted to be adding Kaitlyn to our squad. She is a proven international full-back and joins having spent the last few years in one of the best leagues in the world.
“She is fast, dynamic and loves to support in attack and defence, so we are all looking forward to working with her.”
The 25-year-old has most recently been playing in the USA, joining Portland Thorns in 2025 following a spell with San Diego Wave, where she won the NWSL Challenge Cup.
The Thorns – who finished third in the NWSL table last season, and reached the semi-finals of the play-off phase – announced last month that Torpey was now a free agent following the expiry of her contract.
Torpey’s move to Newcastle follows the signing of former Thorns team-mate Sam Coffey for Manchester City earlier in the week.
In her native Australia, she played for Melbourne City – and her initial move to America set a record for the biggest transfer fee received by a club in the A-League Women.
Prior to that, she spent the first years of her professional career at Brisbane Roar.
Internationally, she has 21 caps for the Matildas, and was part of their squad for the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
