Bafétimbi Gomis has endorsed Jean-Michel Aulas’s bid to become Lyon’s mayor, following support from Karim Benzema. According to L'Équipe, the former Olympique Lyonnais striker has appeared in a campaign video backing the former club president.

With a little over a month before the first round of municipal elections, Gomis, who played for Lyon between 2009 and 2014 during Aulas’s presidency, has publicly aligned himself with the candidate.

He said Aulas’s love and dedication to Lyon are beyond doubt, and he thinks Aulas would make a great mayor, restoring pride, security and more to a city he says needs it.

In December, Benzema also voiced his backing, saying Aulas should become mayor because it is where he belongs. He argued Aulas would move things forward and urged him to go for it, calling it excellent for Lyon.

The field also includes incumbent Grégory Doucet (Les Écologistes - PS - PCF - Place publique), Anaïs Belouassa-Cherifi (LFI), Delphine Briday (Lutte ouvrière), Alexandre Humbert Dupalais (UDR - RN), Georges Képénékian (Divers centre - Equinoxe) and Nathalie Perrin-Gilbert (Divers gauche).
