Alexander Barboza was handed a two-match suspension by the STJD on Friday for his March red card against Flamengo while he was at Botafogo, according to Globo.com.

The Argentine defender was punished under article 258, which covers any breach of sporting ethics. He has already served one match automatically, and the decision is open to appeal.

He was sent off in the first half for stopping a clear scoring chance. The match report recorded that he abused the referee as he left the pitch and again in the tunnel, and needed to be restrained by team-mates.

The ban could complicate his Palmeiras debut. He has been announced by the club but can only play once the transfer window opens after the World Cup.

If the ruling stands, he will sit out Coritiba on 22 July, the first game after the World Cup pause. In that scenario, his debut would come four days later against Atlético-MG in São Paulo.

Palmeiras have paid about R$ 20 million to sign Barboza mid-year. His Botafogo contract ran until December and was not going to be renewed.
