FC Barcelona were in a very bad situation, languishing mid-table, when Joan Laporta appointed Xavi Hernandez as the new manager of the club. In two and a half seasons in charge of the Catalan club, the midfield legend reinstated the team’s identity.

Xavi lifted the La Liga title in his first full season as Barcelona manager. He got the team to play a good brand of football, albeit not outright attacking, and he also promoted a number of La Masia players, making them mainstays in the first team.

Despite not having much backing in his second season at Barcelona in terms of transfers, Xavi helped the club transition from the post-Busquets, post-Alba, and post-Pique era, laying the foundations for a new period of dominance. However, with the results not favourable, he was dismissed at the end of the season.

This week, Xavi was seen attending Victor Font’s ‘Nosaltres Barca’ presentation, sparking speculation about a potential return to the club should there be a change in presidency. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Font addressed the situation directly.

“Barça is the club of his life, but he has no intention or interest in returning to work for the club. The only thing we need to do is ensure that all this legendary talent — like Iniesta, Puyol, Busquets — can contribute when necessary.”

It would have been very easy for Font to use Xavi’s name in a manner that could have given him an edge in this presidential race. However, he has made it very clear from the outset that the 45-year-old has no intention of coming back.

It is a shame to see what the media and the club have done to a person who gave his heart and soul to the club, both as a player and a manager. Let us hope Xavi returns to management soon and leads another club to success.
