Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s proposed loan move to Ajax has hit another serious obstacle, leaving FC Barcelona with a problem they had hoped would already be resolved.

The German goalkeeper appeared close to completing the switch after Barca gave the operation its approval, but the agreement has now stalled at the final stage.

According to MARCA, the latest disagreement concerns both the tax implications of the move and how Ter Stegen’s salary would be divided between Barcelona and Ajax.

Salary split leaves deal at a standstill

Barcelona are unwilling to make further concessions because of their financial fair play position.

Ajax, meanwhile, are said to have reached the limit of what they can contribute towards the goalkeeper’s wages. That has left the two clubs unable to bridge the remaining gap.

The situation is particularly frustrating because Ter Stegen had prepared to travel to the Netherlands and begin the next chapter of his career.

Instead, he remains in Barcelona while the parties search for a solution.

This is not the first time the operation has become complicated. What initially looked like a logical loan for all sides has repeatedly been slowed by financial and contractual issues.

From Barca’s perspective, the delay is becoming increasingly inconvenient.

Hansi Flick has already moved on in sporting terms, and Ter Stegen is no longer viewed as part of the coach’s plans. Keeping the captain in limbo benefits nobody, especially during a preseason in which the squad structure needs to become clearer.

The club also need the financial relief that his departure could provide. Even a loan would help reduce the wage burden and create more flexibility for the remaining transfer business.

Ajax still looks like the most sensible destination. Ter Stegen would have the chance to play regularly, while Barcelona could avoid a difficult dressing-room situation involving a respected veteran who has lost his place.

However, sensible deals do not always become simple deals.

Barcelona must now decide how far they are prepared to compromise without damaging their own financial position.
