Although FC Barcelona had already won the La Liga title a few weeks ago, the league campaign officially came to an end on Saturday night. The Catalans had to face a defeat in this last game of the season, at the hands of Valencia, who beat them 3-1 at Mestalla.
This certainly was not an ideal way to end the league campaign, and Hansi Flick expressed his disappointment with the result in his presser after the game. However, as Mundo Deportivo has noted, with the end of the league, several Blaugrana players have been confirmed winners of some individual titles.
For instance, Joan Garcia was officially confirmed as the winner of the Zamora Trophy, awarded to the goalkeeper with the best goals conceded ratio in La Liga by MARCA.
The Spaniard conceded only 21 goals in 30 league games this season, while his deputy, Wojciech Szczesny, ended the campaign having conceded 15 goals in 8 appearances, including the three goals against Valencia.
Interestingly, Flick decided to leave Joan Garcia on the bench for the final game of the season. With the league title already wrapped up and Valencia still fighting for a Conference League place in front of their home fans, there was some risk involved in starting Garcia, especially considering his advantage in the Zamora race.
However, despite Joan Garcia’s individual success, Barcelona did not finish the season as the best defensive side in La Liga. The Catalan giants conceded 36 goals overall, while Real Madrid ended the campaign with 35 goals conceded after their win over Athletic Club on the final matchday.
Meanwhile, two Barcelona forwards will end the season sharing the Zarra Trophy, which is awarded to the top Spanish goalscorer in La Liga by MARCA as well. Both Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres finished the league campaign with 16 goals each.
With Lamine unavailable through injury, Ferran had the opportunity to claim the award outright against his former side. Although the Spaniard tried to get himself on the scoresheet, he was unable to do so, with Robert Lewandowski scoring Barcelona’s only goal of the night instead.
The Barcelona duo ultimately finished ahead of Mikel Oyarzabal, who ended the season with 15 goals, and Borja Iglesias, who finished with 14.
In that regard, Barcelona also narrowly missed two objectives set for the end of the season. Following the recent Clasico win over Real Madrid, Flick had reportedly challenged his players to reach 100 points and 100 goals in La Liga this season.
However, the Catalans ultimately fell short of both targets, ending the league campaign with 94 points and 95 goals to their name.
