Barcelona are considering signing a new midfielder this summer, given that Frenkie de Jong is injured and Marc Casado could be sold. Sporting director Deco has been exploring the market in recent weeks, and one of the leading candidates that he has identified is Manchester City and Spain superstar Rodri.
It’s very likely that Rodri leaves Man City this summer, given that he has not committed to signing a new contract – his existing deal ends in 2027. Barcelona are one of the clubs in the race for his signature, although it’s been reported of late that they trail arch rivals Real Madrid, whom the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner would prefer to join.
Rodri’s desire to join Real Madrid is exactly why Barcelona have decided not to make a move for him at this stage, as per Sport. Although they have been informed about his situation, the Catalan club will not make a move unless the 30-year-old signals his intention to move to the Spotify Camp Nou.
At this stage, there is no rush within Barcelona to sign a new midfielder. They are continuing to prioritise deals for Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo, and a pivot may not end up being needed at all if de Jong recovers from his knee injury earlier than anticipated.
While there is no doubt that Rodri would be a fantastic signing for Barcelona, he is not an essential player. Thus, it makes sense for any move to be delayed for now, especially as they wait for more clarity as to whether Real Madrid end up managing to agree a deal with Man City, having already agreed personal terms with the world champion.
For now, it remains to be seen how the situation with Rodri plays out, but Barcelona are simply prepared to watch.
