Barcelona have made a firm decision regarding their attacking options for the foreseeable future.

According to a report from SPORT, the club will not pursue a new centre-forward this summer, effectively ending their interest in Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish striker had been on the radar, with negotiations explored to potentially lower his transfer fee. However, with Barcelona’s stance now clear, neither Gyokeres nor Newcastle United’s Aleksander Isak will be arriving in the summer.

Why is that?

A key factor behind this decision is Robert Lewandowski. The club has already exercised the extension clause in his contract, securing his stay beyond the required number of matches for activation.

This move is not just a contractual formality but a strong vote of confidence in the Polish striker. Both the sporting department and Hansi Flick see him as the primary attacking option moving forward, reinforcing his role as the club’s undisputed number 9.

Barcelona’s message to the market is clear—Lewandowski remains central to their project, meaning they will not invest in another centre-forward this summer.

Flick trusts Lewandowski

The decision to retain Lewandowski was expected given his impressive goal-scoring record and leadership on the field. Despite turning 37 next summer, he continues to play at a high level and remains a crucial asset for the team.

Additionally, Barcelona have secured an option to extend his contract for another year until 2027, which will be reviewed based on his performances next season.

His future beyond 2026 will depend on multiple factors, including his form, the team’s success, and the club’s financial situation.

At this stage, Barcelona also have no plans to sign a backup striker on a free transfer. This is because both Flick and Deco believe the squad already has enough firepower with Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, and Dani Olmo.
