Barcelona’s pursuit of Jorge Salinas has become increasingly complicated after Atletico Madrid have emerged as serious contenders for the Racing Santander defender.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign and is now attracting attention from some of Spain’s biggest clubs following his impressive performances.
Salinas played an important role in Racing Santander’s successful promotional season and has established himself as one of the most exciting young defensive prospects in Spanish football.
According to AS, Atletico Madrid have now taken concrete steps in their efforts to sign Salinas.
The Madrid-based club are in discussions with Racing Santander regarding a potential deal for the defender, who is represented by influential agent Jorge Mendes.
Atletico’s growing interest comes at a time when Barcelona are still evaluating their next move in the operation.
Despite strong links with Barcelona in recent weeks, however, the Catalan giants are still some distance away from securing the youngster’s signature.
As reported before, the club has already made preliminary contacts through Mendes, but no agreement has been reached with either the player or Racing Santander.
At this stage, discussions have largely revolved around exploring possibilities rather than finalising a transfer.
That situation has opened the door for rival clubs to make their own moves, and Atletico Madrid appear determined to take advantage.

With no deal close to completion, the race remains wide open heading into a crucial phase of the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, it must be noted that Racing Santander are standing firm on their valuation of the player.
Reports suggest interested clubs are being directed towards a release clause exceeding the previously mentioned €16 million figure, which Barcelona are not willing to match.
As a result, the longer negotiations remain unresolved, the greater the likelihood of a bidding battle.
Unless Barcelona accelerate their efforts, Atletico Madrid could place themselves in a strong position to secure one of the most promising young defenders.
