When Joao Cancelo rejoined Barcelona on a loan deal in January, very few expected him to be an outright success, as he was largely brought in as a backup.
However, following the unexpected injuries to Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, Cancelo has become a central figure in Hansi Flick’s setup.
The Portuguese international’s performances on the flanks have been a key driver of Barcelona’s recent success, with the defender already racking up one goal and four assists in just 12 competitive matches.
Cancelo’s loan deal at Barcelona, however, expires at the end of the season. But it appears the Catalans are more than keen on retaining the services of the defender.
As such, Barcelona have kickstarted talks to sign Cancelo on a permanent deal this summer, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The club’s president-elect, Joan Laporta, and Cancelo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, have already started talks over the potential transfer.

It must be noted that Laporta shares an excellent relationship with Mendes and their synergy could play a key role in reaching an agreement.
Cancelo, for now, is contracted to Al Hilal until 2027. The two parties, therefore, must also reach an agreement with the Saudi Arabian outfit to release him prematurely.
Meanwhile, Cancelo’s transfer talks come in the midst of speculation surrounding the future of Alejandro Balde, with Barcelona reportedly open to a sale if it benefits all parties involved.
The Spaniard is likely to fetch a great sum in the transfer market, which in turn could aid Barcelona in their endeavours in the summer transfer window.
It could also guarantee Cancelo’s role in the Barcelona project, though he may have to face renewed competition from a potential new signing as well.
