The Brazilian national team was under fire once again as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Argentina, in a crucial World Cup qualifying match.

Brazil, despite boasting an in-form attacking lineup, were not able to break the shackles of the Argentine defence, with Matheus Cunha’s 29th minute strike appearing only as a consolation.

Vinicius Jr. is among the Brazilian attackers who underperformed on the night, struggling to make any real impact in the final third. He was even involved in a spat with the Argentine players, for which he was criticised by Croatian legend Davor Suker.

Rivaldo lambasts Vinicius after Argentina loss

In the wake of Brazil’s embarassing defeat to Argentina, footballing legend Rivaldo has now become the latest to criticise Vinicius.

The former Barcelona star specificially pointed fingers at the Real Madrid superstar and his muted record for the Brazilian national team.

“He has I don’t know how many appearances for the national team and only six goals, if I’m not mistaken,” he said about Vinicius (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Vinicius’ record with the Brazilian national team is indeed quite disappointing, with the forward scoring just six goals in 39 matches. This is far from ideal for a player of his calibre.

However, Rivaldo did acknowledge that Vinicius is a top player and needs to play more for Brazil. But he implied that the forward must bring his A game when playing for the national team.

“He needs to play more because he’s a great player. He needs to be the benchmark for the Brazilian national team. Raphinha too,” he added.

Vinicius will be back in action for the Brazilian national team only after the end of the season, with the Selecao slated to take on Venezuela in June, which will be followed by a game against Paraguay a few days later.

These games will serve as a litmus test for the Real Madrid superstar, as he looks to improve his record for the national team.
