FC Barcelona remain committed to the possibility of bringing Julian Alvarez to the Spotify Camp Nou this summer. However, playing for the Catalan giants is a huge responsibility with a lot of pressure, and perhaps few know that better than Uruguayan great Luis Suarez.
Previously a player for Barça, famously having been a part of the ‘MSN’ trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr, Suarez managed to cement himself as one of the greatest strikers to ever play for the club. While he may no longer be affiliated directly to the Catalan club today, his experience and past hold a lot of weight.
That is why, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, his recent comments on Barça’s pursuit of a new striker are rather interesting to assess. Firstly, he responded to the question asking him what kind of stylistic fit or profile should Barcelona be looking for when it comes to a new striker:
“Given the way Barcelona play today, I think they need more of a fixed No. 9, like Lewandowski was, complemented by the work Ferran does. But it’s never easy to arrive at Barcelona and perform from day one. If you come in and score four or five goals in your first few games, you immediately set the bar very high.”
Moreover, he elaborated on the fact that maintaining a high level after joining a club like Barça is a big challenge in its own right:
“Exactly. That’s why I always say one of the hardest things for those of us who arrived at Barcelona was maintaining that standard for years. The expectations were enormous, and we delivered. Of course, there were bad matches, but three days later you had the chance to bounce back… There are several No. 9s today who could fit Barcelona and live up to what the club demands. We’ll see what the club decides after the World Cup.”
Later on during the interview, he was asked about his opinion on Barça’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez and whether or not he fits the kind of profile that Suarez would like to see at the club:
“Yes, obviously. A player as intelligent as Julián, with the path he’s taken since leaving River Plate, through Manchester City, Atlético Madrid and the Argentina national team, would arrive and adapt because he knows how to fulfil his role.”
The Uruguayan legend further praised the Argentinian forward and highlighted some of his best attributes as well while explaining why he thinks Alvarez would make sense at the Catalan club:
“He’s a player who works incredibly hard. At Barcelona, he would have wingers creating plenty of chances for him. He links up well, makes excellent movements and would fit into Barcelona immediately.”
To receive the backing of such an iconic striker is a big compliment by itself, and to be praised by him is possibly an even bigger one. However, while the Julian Alvarez operation remains active, it is still up in the air whether or not La Blaugrana are ultimately able to take him away from Atletico Madrid this summer.
