Real Madrid were condemned to an early exit from the Copa del Rey as second division side Albacete defeated the Spanish heavyweights 3-2 in the Round of 16 last night.

The Merengues, kicking off a new era under the management of Alvaro Arbeloa, following the sacking of Xabi Alonso earlier in the week, were nowhere near the level required and paid the ultimate price.

Gerard Pique pokes fun

Even as Real Madrid fans are hurting from the team’s shock elimination at the hands of the lower league side, some in the Barcelona camp are taking great pleasures from what unfolded on Wednesday.

One such person happens to be former Barcelona captain and club legend Gerard Pique.

After Real Madrid’s elimination by Albacete in the Copa del Rey, the current president of the Kings League fired off an ironic message in the competition’s Twitch chat that went viral within minutes.

“Good debut of the new Madrid,” he wrote, as per Mundo Deportivo, poking fun at new manager Arbeloa and Real Madrid.

It is worth remembering that the relationship between Pique and Arbeloa, dating back to their playing days at Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, was one of mutual rivalry.

So, it does not come as a surprise to see Pique making an attempt to mock the new Real Madrid manager following a forgettable debut match in charge for him.

As for Los Blancos, it is time to regroup and analyse what has been going wrong and work towards getting back on the right track.

Up next for Arbeloa and Real Madrid is a La Liga clash against Levante on Saturday afternoon, where the new man in charge will hope to pick up his first victory and close the gap to leaders Barcelona.
