On-loan Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet could finally make his debut for Atletico Madrid in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season—against Real Madrid on matchday 8, reports SPORT.

It has been a long wait for the French centre-back since his transfer was finalised, but the opportunity to feature in such a high-stakes match could serve as a significant reward if Diego Simeone chooses to include him in the starting line-up.

Lenglet’s road to this point has not been smooth. Ahead of the game against Rayo Vallecano, Simeone hinted at the possibility of Lenglet playing, but the French defender did not get any minutes in that game.

Similarly, he remained on the bench for the following fixture against Celta Vigo despite Cesar Azpilicueta’s absence.

Azpilicueta’s swift integration into the team has pushed Lenglet down the pecking order, with Lenglet finding himself as the third-choice option, even behind Reinildo.

Things are turning for Lenglet

One of the reasons for Lenglet’s limited involvement so far has been the delay in completing his transfer to Atletico Madrid. His move required an extension of his contract with Barcelona, which now runs until 2027.

This extension was necessary to defer a portion of his wages, allowing both clubs to work out a financial agreement.

Despite these challenges, Simeone has praised Lenglet for his hard work, commitment, and professionalism. However, the Atletico manager has made it clear that Lenglet will need to earn his place in the squad.

With Azpilicueta currently sidelined through injury and the team’s packed schedule requiring rotation, Lenglet now has the perfect opportunity to prove his worth.

Meanwhile, Lenglet’s experience against Real Madrid could prove invaluable. During his time with Sevilla, he managed one win, one draw, and two defeats against the club.

As a Barcelona player, he achieved three wins, two draws, and two losses, including a memorable 5-1 victory over the Merengues.

Although those triumphs are now five years in the past, Lenglet is no stranger to the pressure and intensity of a Madrid derby. Now, with Atletico Madrid, he will look to make his mark once again.
