Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona seems increasingly uncertain, as recent reports from AS reveal that his agent, Ali Dursun, has been exploring potential opportunities in the Saudi Pro League.

This development suggests that the Dutch midfielder might already be considering a life away from Barcelona, even though his current contract with Barcelona runs until June 2026.

Dursun has reportedly initiated contact with Saudi clubs, inquiring about the league’s progress, day-to-day life, and cultural aspects in the country.

While these discussions are still at an early stage, they indicate movement within De Jong’s camp regarding his future plans.

The Saudi Pro League, with its financial muscle, is one of the few markets capable of accommodating De Jong’s substantial contract, making it a plausible destination should he decide to leave Barcelona.

Renewal difficult at Barcelona because…

Barcelona, on their part, remain interested in renewing De Jong’s contract but are keen to do so on significantly reduced terms. Currently, the Dutch international earns around €9 million net annually, along with a loyalty bonus of €4.2 million.

Furthermore, he is entitled to an additional €2 million if he participates in at least 60% of Barcelona’s matches this season.

However, the club’s sporting management has made it clear that they are unwilling to continue on these terms if he refuses to negotiate a renewal.

The situation is further complicated by the strained relationship between De Jong and the club, stemming from Barcelona’s attempts to offload him during the summer of 2022.

Relationship is strained

Despite staying at the club, the atmosphere remains tense, and Barcelona’s plan is firm—if De Jong does not agree to a renewal, he may no longer feature prominently in the squad next season.

If he decides to run down his contract until 2026, his market value could diminish significantly, making a move less lucrative.

On the other hand, the Saudi Pro League could offer a short-term solution or even a medium- to long-term option for the midfielder.

The coming months will be crucial in determining his next steps, as he has yet to fully assert himself on the field this season.

For now, the uncertainty surrounding De Jong’s future persists, and Barcelona face a tough decision regarding their prized midfielder.
