Although all the headlines in and around Barcelona point to the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, Deco and co are also eyeing moves for a new fullback.

They are actively working on a deal to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent basis. But in addition, the club have been linked with a move for Jorge Salinas as well.

Currently plying his trade for Racing Santander, Barcelona wanted to sign Salinas as a cover for Alejandro Balde. But his €16 million release clause has always been a deterring factor.

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered a fresh update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Salinas, as we enter the final month of the transfer market.

According to the report, Barcelona have set a firm ceiling of between €4-6 million for the 19-year-old, viewing him as a player for the future rather than someone who needs to arrive immediately.

That valuation falls well short of his release clause, which climbed to €16 million on July 1st following Racing’s promotion to LaLiga.

The Cantabrian club, for their part, remain adamant they will not budge from the terms of his contract, which runs until 2029.

Despite the financial gap, Barcelona have not walked away from the pursuit.

Salinas enjoyed a breakout campaign, playing 33 matches and providing six assists as Racing secured their return to the top flight, before capping it off by winning the Under-19 European Championship alongside Barcelona’s own Xavi Espart.

Although naturally a left-footed centre-back, he impressed playing at left-back last season, a versatility that has only strengthened his profile at Camp Nou.

He is represented by Jorge Mendes, whose agency has already held talks with Joan Laporta and Deco, suggesting Barcelona remain hopeful of striking a deal, provided Racing eventually soften their stance.

For now, though, the two parties remain far apart, and any move is likely to depend on Barcelona’s ability to negotiate the fee down closer to their valuation.
