FC Barcelona will be taking on Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey, and it promises to be a big fixture for both teams. Considered the two strongest teams in the competition right now, a good result in the first leg can go a long way in determining which team goes through.
Unfortunately for Hansi Flick, some key players are currently sidelined and will not be available for this clash. Still, the German coach should have enough quality at his disposal to ensure his team gets a good result here.
Here is how Barcelona could line up in this game.
Goalkeeper: Joan Garcia
The Spanish goalkeeper has been reliable all season for Hansi Flick’s side, and he remains the top choice in between the sticks. However, he will need to be at his best for this particular encounter.
Right-back: Jules Kounde
Despite his inconsistent performances this season, Jules Kounde remains a key part of this team. With Lamine Yamal operating ahead of him as well, the Frenchman seems to operate more effectively and link up well with his teammates.
Centre-back: Ronald Araujo
In the event of injuries or tactical adjustments that see Eric Garcia play further forward, Araujo could be handed a starting role. His recent performances make him a reliable choice.
Centre-back: Pau Cubarsi
The young defender has a lot of qualities that could hurt Atletico Madrid, and his ball-playing is a clearly strong trait of his. Alongside the right players and with the right structure, he can be highly effective against any team.
Left-back: Alejandro Balde
Always a threat on the left flank, Alejandro Balde is a guaranteed starter if fully fit and available. If he plays at his best level, Atletico Madrid could have a lot to deal with on that left flank for the entirety of the game.
CDM: Eric Garcia
A clear favourite of Hansi Flick’s, Eric Garcia continues to be a consistent part of his team plans. His intensity and commitment are both unquestionable, and that is exactly why it seems likely that he could end up starting this game.
CDM: Frenkie de Jong
With Pedri still sidelined, a lot of the midfield responsibilities will be placed on the Dutch midfielder. Fortunately, he has the quality and form to justify those expectations, and he can deliver top performances when he plays at his best.
RAM: Lamine Yamal
A lot of expectations and eyes will be on Lamine Yamal during this game. With many key players unavailable, the young winger might have to produce something truly special in order to help Barcelona get a positive result in this game.
CAM: Dani Olmo
The Spaniard could be an effective player to deploy right behind the striker. He tends to do well in tight spaces, and considering Atletico Madrid’s structure and intensity, his set of skills could be useful here.
LAM: Fermin Lopez
With both Raphinha and Marcus Rashford sidelined for this game, Fermin Lopez might prove himself to be a good option to take over the offensive duties on the left side. His intensity and eye for goal could prove to be useful assets.
Centre-forward: Robert Lewandowski
The Polish veteran knows how to score against top sides, and he has found the back of the net against Atletico Madrid in the past as well. His experience could be impactful in this game if he starts.
