Barcelona set to face Real Madrid competition for key defensive target | OneFootball

By now, it is public knowledge that FC Barcelona will go after a new defensive signing in the summer of 2026.

Inigo Martinez’s exit has left a gaping hole in the defensive unit, while question marks linger over Ronald Araujo’s suitability for Hansi Flick’s tactical setup.

Furthermore, Andreas Christensen’s contract expires in the summer, and even if he is renewed, his injury issues are a concern.

So, Barcelona plan to sign a new centre-back as a priority, with the preference being a left-footed player. In that regard, Borussia Dortmund mainstay Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a key target.

The German international will be entering the final year of his contract at Signal Iduna Park in 2026 and does not appear keen on an extension, with a summer departure seeming likely.

Real Madrid also eye Schlotterbeck

Barcelona have entered the race for Schlotterbeck, with manager Hansi Flick knowing the player well, having handed the defender his Germany national team debut.

However, according to ESPN, Barça’s arch-rivals Real Madrid have also set their sights on a move for Schlotterbeck.

The Spanish capital club are also scouring the market for defensive reinforcements for the summer and are looking at several options, one of whom happens to be the German star.

As per the report, Real Madrid hold Schlotterbeck in high regard, as they see him as a complete defender with extensive experience at the highest level.

The 26-year-old centre-half could, thus, spark a transfer war between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

It has been previously suggested that Schlotterbeck might lean towards a move to the Santiago Bernabeu should Los Blancos come calling, which could put Barça at a disadvantage.

What appears certain is that the defender will be on his way out of Dortmund come the summer of 2026. Only time will tell whether either Barcelona or Real Madrid make a move for him.
