As Spain prepare for one of their toughest tests of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has reserved special praise for the player he believes could make the biggest difference for Belgium.

Ahead of Friday’s quarter-final, the teenage sensation described Real Madrid veteran Thibaut Courtois as one of the finest goalkeepers in world football while insisting his focus remains on helping Spain reach the semi-finals.

As anticipation builds for the World Cup quarter-final between Spain and Belgium, the Barcelona forward has stirred the clash with his comments.

Yamal acknowledges Courtois’ quality

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Yamal was asked about the challenge of facing Belgium and, in particular, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has once again played a crucial role in his country’s World Cup campaign.

The Barcelona winger admitted that beating Courtois will be one of Spain’s biggest challenges but stressed that he will approach the game with the same winning mentality as always.

He said, “Yes. For me, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“That will make things more difficult for me, but as always, I’ll go out there wanting to win and not thinking about any particular player,” he added.

Real Madrid goalkeeper is Belgium’s biggest weapon

Courtois heads into the quarter-final in outstanding form after producing several decisive performances during Belgium’s run to the last eight.

Now appearing in his fourth FIFA World Cup, the Real Madrid goalkeeper remains the undisputed first choice for his national team and one of their most influential players.

Spain are well aware that breaking down Belgium’s defence will not be easy while Courtois is between the posts.

His experience in high-pressure situations and ability to produce match-winning saves have repeatedly proven decisive for both club and country.

Meanwhile, the quarter-final also renews a rivalry that has produced memorable World Cup encounters in the past.

Spain and Belgium have met twice previously on football’s biggest stage, with each nation claiming one victory.
